Whooper swan The whooper swan (Gygnus gygnus) is Finland's national bird. A few decades ago, this bird had almost become extinct, but luckily after some strict protection activity the population is once again vibrant throughout Finland. Photography of the whooper swan can be started in the spring. The most advantageous locations are the first open waters in rivers and creeks, where the swans look for food. Photography locations can also be prepared by placing seeds to attract swans, and by setting a photography hide close by. Along with the swan, other birds such as the bean goose (Anser fabalis) and the common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) can be photographed. Photographing is also possible later on in the summer, but it must be done with utmost discreet so as not to disturb the swans and their young ones.
